International Women’s Day

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #Choose to Challenge. As we celebrate this important day, it’s indeed fitting that today’s post recognizes women’s achievements in Science as we feature Christine Carrington, Professor of Molecular Genetics and Virology at the University of the West Indies. Professor Carrington, as one of our renowned women of Science in the region, has and continues to challenge the barriers that seek to exclude women and girls from participating fully in Science. Professor Carrington’s research focuses on emerging viruses and she is currently a part of a research team from the UWI to analyze coronavirus genomes from infected individuals to better understand the virus and our immune system’s response to it. We invite you to view this enlightening video with Professor Carrington as she shares her thoughts with us on the STEM vs STEAM debate as well as the involvement of young girls and women in Science.
